Into the Forest, ‘Ind I Skoven’

Graduate Residency at Guldagergaard, International Ceramic Research Centre, Denmark 2020.

These vessels explore the elements of a forest through exploring its raw materials, the earth and trees.
The wood has been shaped to reveal the organic textures hidden within the grain structure. Each knot in holds a memory of a rutted, twisting branch, the layers of growth across the seasons.  Casting this into clay creates a shadow or memory of the tree.

The use of ash glazes and wood-firing physically embeds locally sourced Danish wood within the ceramic process. These curved vessels explore the moment where clay and wood can intertwine.

Developing Ash Glazes

I developed various ash glazes using ashes from local Danish hardwood. The process traps the minerals within the tree into the glaze giving a variety of colours depending on the firing conditions and other raw materials present in the glaze.
