Botanical Plates

Get inspired by nature and get immersed in this botanical themed pottery workshop and my studios based at Great Walstead School, Lindfield.

This workshop will begin with a walk around the ancient woodlands surrounding the studio to forage for plants to use in your designs to to create beautiful, natural patterns in the clay. This this will take around 45 minutes walking slowly.

In the studio you will be making your own slab rolled botanical plates. You’ll be designing and pressing your seasonal plants into the clay and then using plaster moulds to shape your plates. These will be trimmed and neatened then left to dry. We will also be making small pinched trinket dishes. I’ll be adding oxide to the plates before firing them to bring out the natural patterns.

Who is this for? Anyone keen to get their hands stuck into clay and learn some hand building techniques. And for anyone wanting to learn more about how to apply natural textures to clay. Minimum age 13+, Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.

What to bring? All tools and materials will be provided along with an apron. Wearing old clothes is advisable. Tea and biscuits are included! Each person will have 1 botanical plate fired plus one extra piece.

Collection: Ceramic work will be ready within 6 weeks after the workshop to allow time for pieces to be slowly dried, fired, coloured and glazed. Pots can be collected from the studio, or a central Brighton location. Alternatively they can be posted to you for an extra £10. UK first class Royal Mail.

Accessibility:

Due to the studio being an old building it is unfortunately not officially set up for wheelchair access. However, It is possible to attach a ramp onto the back door but please be aware that the door frame is only 68cm wide (rather than the 81cm wheelchair access requirement). And we do have one wheel that can be adjusted for a wheelchair user. Please get in touch if you have any queries about access needs to the space before you book.

Pottery Breakages Disclaimer:

Your ceramic pieces will be handled in a careful and experienced way. However, the nature of ceramics involves putting natural materials through very high temperatures. There are many variable factors involved in the process, which means that there is always a risk of technical failures and breakages which cannot be controlled.
